Gallup Poll Shows Wide Open 2008 Elections May Be “Opportune Moment” for Associations

On the heels of a recent Gallop poll, “This is may be the opportune moment that associations nationwide have been waiting for,” according to Pat Bainter, Managing Director of Strategic Guidance Systems, the premier provider of political services to associations nationwide. “The wide open 2008 election cycle will provide associations with the opportunity to support candidates that support them, boosting association prominence and returning the ultimate value to their members—the protection of their interests,” Bainter added.

According to the June 11-14, 2007 survey conducted by Gallop, the public is in a dissatisfied mood regarding governmental institutions in general and Congress in particular. Congress rated the lowest among governmental institutions, and the lowest in Gallop’s four decades of polling this issue, with merely 14% of Americans having a good deal of confidence in Congress. Only 24% of Americans approve of the way Congress is handling its job, while 71% of Americans disapprove. “The current 24% rating is similar to the poor ratings Congress received last year, with Americans essentially voting to take control of Congress away from the Republicans in November” stated Gallop’s analysis of the poll.

The Congress is not the only area of the country that Americans feel dissatisfied with. Three out of four Americans feel that the country in general is moving in the wrong direction. Only one out of four Americans feels that the country’s governmental institutions are moving in the right direction. “This dissatisfaction has implications all the way down to the local level,” said Bainter, “and that’s where the door is wide open for associations.”
